Overview

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has a simply stated but important mission: Save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. With suicide as the #10 leading cause of death in the U.S., AFSP seeks to change that through suicide prevention education programs, public policy advocacy, funding for new scientific research, and programs for loss and healing. The AFSP Western PA chapter in 2017 trained over 2,300 people on suicide prevention, including in workplaces, for faith groups, schools and higher education institutions, and even at a state prison. Its Out of the Darkness community and campus walks in 2017 united over 3,500 people for the cause. The chapter also appeared at major community events, including at Pride Fest, PNC Park, and various health fairs, and representatives did extensive local news media appearances.
